Taste
Glazed ceramic is non-reactive, so it doesn't change the flavor of coffee or tea. Good food-grade stainless steel is also largely neutral, but some coffee drinkers notice a faint metallic taste, especially with lighter, more acidic roasts.
Keeping coffee hot
A thick ceramic mug holds warmth well while you sit and drink. A single-wall steel mug actually loses heat quickly. The real advantage belongs to double-wall, vacuum-insulated stainless steel, which can keep coffee hot for hours.
Durability and safety
Stainless steel is nearly indestructible. Ceramic can chip if dropped, but with normal care a mug lasts for years. For safety with ceramic, choose mugs that are clearly labeled lead-free.
Cleaning and care
Ceramic mugs are usually dishwasher and microwave safe. Many insulated steel mugs should be hand washed to protect the vacuum seal and exterior coating, and they can never be microwaved.
