How to Wrap a Mug
Mugs are one of the easiest gifts to give and one of the trickiest to wrap. The round body and the handle make wrapping paper crease in all the wrong places. These four methods give you a neat result, from quick to extra special.
Method 1: Wrap a mug with wrapping paper
- Fill the gaps. Stuff a sheet of tissue paper through the handle and into the mug. This evens out the shape.
- Cut the paper. Cut a rectangle that wraps around the mug with a few inches of overlap, and is about twice as tall as the mug.
- Roll it up. Stand the mug in the middle, wrap the paper around it and tape the seam.
- Close the bottom. Fold the paper under the base in small pleats and tape it down.
- Gather the top. Bunch the paper above the rim and tie it with ribbon, like a party favor.
Method 2: Put the mug in a box first
The neatest option. Place the mug in a small, snug box with crinkle paper or tissue around it, then wrap the box like any other gift. It also protects the mug if the present travels.
Method 3: Tissue paper and a gift bag
Wrap the mug loosely in two or three sheets of tissue paper, place it in a small gift bag and add more tissue on top so the tips stick out. Quick, pretty and no tape needed.
Method 4: Cellophane for a filled mug
Filled the mug with cocoa, candy or coffee? Show it off. Set the mug in the middle of a square of clear cellophane, pull the corners up above the rim and tie them together with ribbon. Add a gift tag.
Tips for wrapping and shipping mugs
- The handle is the weakest point, so pad it well with tissue or bubble wrap.
- Fill the mug before you wrap it; it's much harder to add treats afterwards.
- For shipping, use a box with at least an inch of padding on every side.
