Are Ceramic Mugs Microwave Safe?
Most plain, glazed ceramic mugs are microwave safe. Problems usually come from metallic decoration, cracks, or mugs with unknown glazes. Here's how to tell whether your mug can go in the microwave, and how to heat drinks safely.
When a ceramic mug is microwave safe
Glazed ceramic doesn't absorb much microwave energy, so the drink heats up while the mug only gets warm from the liquid inside. A mug is generally safe to microwave when it:
- has no metal rim, gold or silver lettering or metallic paint
- has no cracks, chips or crazing in the glaze
- is labeled microwave safe or shows the wavy-lines microwave symbol on the bottom
When you should not microwave a mug
- Metallic details: gold, silver or chrome accents can spark and damage both the mug and the microwave.
- Cracks or chips: moisture trapped in a crack can expand with heat and make the crack worse.
- Unknown or decorative pieces: vintage, souvenir or decor-only mugs may use glazes that aren't meant for food or heat.
- Travel mugs: anything with a stainless steel body or lining should never go in the microwave.
A simple test for unlabeled mugs
Place the empty mug in the microwave next to a separate microwave-safe cup of water. Heat for one minute. If the water is warm and the mug stays cool or only slightly warm, the mug is likely microwave safe. If the mug itself is hot, don't use it in the microwave. Handle it carefully, since it may be hot.
Are ceramic mugs lead-free?
Lead was historically used in some ceramic glazes, and poorly made or decorative pieces can still contain it. In the US, the FDA sets limits for lead that can leach from ceramic ware used for food and drinks. When in doubt, buy from a seller that clearly states its mugs are lead-free.
All our mugs are made from lead- and BPA-free ceramic.
Tips for microwaving a drink in a mug
- Heat in 30 to 60 second bursts and stir in between.
- When heating plain water, place a wooden stirrer in the mug. It helps prevent superheating, where water suddenly boils over as you move the mug.
- Never microwave an empty mug.
- Hold the handle with care, since it can get warm from the drink.
